The idea was central to most Greek thought, and especially that of Pythagoras, Plato and subsequent Neoplatonism. Thus the universe may be regarded as a large living organism (see panpsychism). So what we perceive or feel is this combination of the Eternally Formed and the Eternally Formless. The macrocosm is the world as a whole, with a microcosm being one small part, often mankind, taken as a model of it.

Steiner discusses the various paths of self-development that lead across these two thresholds and to the transformation of human soul-forces into spiritual organs of perception. In the 1950s, the American Southwest became a crossroads for Abstract Expressionists. This dual aspect of the Universal Soul is eternal. The human life alternates between the great, external macrocosm and the invisible inner microcosm. Therefore, in the beginning was the Word etc. This covering of the one by the other is analogous to the relation between an idea and the word expressing it: they are one and the same and it is only by a mental abstraction that one can distinguish them. a representation of a smaller unit or entity by a larger one, presumably of a similar structure. Shivâ is embracing Shiva: this is not a fancy. The macrocosm mirrors the microcosm and, vice versa. I have a good friend that relates Tarot and many other things as mirrors and this is the best way to think about this. Just as the individual soul is encased in the living body, so is the universal Soul in the Living Prakriti - the objective universe. This is an explanation of the relationship betwen the microcosm (your self, in this example) and the macrocosm (the whole of the Iniverse outside of your self). The microcosm and the macrocosm are built on the same plan.
